Smashed in the face

Bob and Brian, the local morning show guys on 102.9, The Hog, are running a promotion right now where listeners send in their "smashed in the face stories" for a chance to win a 42" plasma television. Well, since my face has suffered through many traumatic events in its 24 years of existence, I decided to put in a few entries. In the coming days, you will get to read all of my stories, and to start out with, here is the one that actually got read on the air...

My 13th birthday, we were visiting my grandma in La Crosse. With it being February and not having a whole lot to do at Grandma's house, I started going through some old boxes of hers and ended up finding a smoke bomb (or what I thought was a smoke bomb). Being a sports nut,
I thought about how cool it would be to light the smoke bomb off and run through the smoke while announcing my name and pretending I was a big sports star. I grabbed some matches and went outside with said "smoke bomb" I set it on a patch of ice and lit the fuse. I remained
only about 2 feet away so I could be engorged in the smoke.

Crouching by the smoke bomb, I heard an enormous "boom" and felt something hit my face. I walked into the house to see horror on my parents' faces as they had no idea what just happened. Not being able to hear anything from the explosion, I couldn't understand why they looked so worried. Eventually I heard my mom ask, "what happened to your face?"
When I got to the hospital, turns out I blew some shrapnel from the M-80 directly under my eye. I also took a piece of de-icing salt to the eye. With part of my ear blown off as well, I received 7 stitches directly below my eye, and a valuable lesson, never trust Grandma.

- Until next time...
